Och… 18-97… what a year, eh?
Well, I don't really think even the elder-sages can remember that far back in time. Luckily there's the Wiki, which remembers very well the year which saw the foundation of Oldsmobile; the birth of Jiroemon Kimura (that was to be the World's oldest person, living till 2013); J.J. Thomson discovering the electron; and… another minor event…

Dracula by Bram Stoker came out.

I knew next to nothing about the book. I was never really into the Vampire genre. Nevertheless, when my gaze fell upon it, for some inexplicable reason, I immediately took it and sat down to read.
And… what a book…

I'll start with a bit of the superficial aspect that surprised me –
Not a drop of holly water throughout the whole.
The garlic… maybe appears once or twice in form of a clove (where the description's unclear) but mostly features as garlic flowers (!).
And all the Vampire traits never seen on screen, such as a lizard-like downward crawl on a wall; Dracula traveling from place to place in the form of dust in the wind; being a dust-creature making his body mass-less (which is why he doesn't appear in looking-glasses).
In short – there's not much between the written Dracula and what was made of him in the visual world.
But it's so much more than that.

Bram Stoker seems to me to have been a very interesting person.
Among other of his merits, I liked how he related to women.
He didn't hesitate (for instance) to fantasize about the future day in which women will propose marriage to men (and do it better). But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

What's more is what is still relevant today.
Stoker based his story on "Progress", while cementing it (in parentheses, because it's the 19th century's Progress, that 21st century's eyes see as beyond outdated and in-valid).
But (!) then he started finding the restrictions of Progress, culminating in the need to find unconventional solutions in the ancient wisdom of the distant past (and what's more relevant to a hyper-advanced technology-based world, in which there is still room for a spiritual New Age and all its alternatives).

And there's still more to it than that.
Fighting evil he placed the Elite of his time – the best and prettiest the Victorian society could offer. However, as the story unfolds, a doubt starts coming up, about the principals that society was based on. And yet again women's position is the best example to this. The woman at the beginning of the story is both admired and perceived as in constant need of protection/be spared. By the end – woman was recognized as fully capable of anything, including self-protection.
(the last two paragraphs are my take on the Afterward of the book, written by Jonty Claypole).

I'll finish up by saying that in this book (of all places) I found a salutation I liked:

"Come freely. Go safely. And leave something of the happiness you bring!"

Does it matter the words were put in Dracula's mouth? Not to me. Stoker could have conducted a vast research into Transylvanian habits/customs. It may have come from there.
And because I liked the salutatuin and the book it came from so much, I took the liberty to paraphrase it on my about page 🙂

אווךךך… 1897… איזו שנה זו הייתה, הא?
טוב, לא נראה לי שאפילו זקני צפת מסוגלים לזכור בעצמם כל כך רחוק בזמן. ואיזה מזל שיש וויקי, הזוכרת מצויין את השנה בה נוסדה חברת אולדסמוביל; נולד היפני שזכה להיות האיש הכי מבוגר בעולם (בחיותו עד 2013); ג'יי.ג'יי. ת'ומסון גילה את האלקטרון; ו… עוד פרט קטן שולי…

דרקולה של בראם סטוקר יצא לאור.

ידעתי כמעט כלום על הסיפור. מעודי לא הייתי מחסידי הז'אנר הערפדי. ובכ"ז משום מה, כאשר מבטי נפל פתאום על הספר – מיד לקחתי ליד והתיישבתי לקרוא.
ו… אי-זה ס-פר…

אתחיל בפרטים השטחיים שקצת הפתיעו אותי –
אף טיפת מי קודש לרפואה לכל האורך.
השום… אולי מופיע פעם או פעמיים בצורת שן/ראש (באותן פעמים זה לא ממש ברור). אבל לְרוב אורך הסיפור זה לא השום עצמו, אלא הפרחים שלו.
וכל תכונות הערפד אותן מעולם לא ראיתי על מסך – זחילה על קיר כלפי מטה (כמו לטאה); מעברו ממקום למקום בצורת אבק; וכתוצאה מהיותו יצור-אבק – חוסר החומריות של גופו (שבגללה אין לו השתקפות במראות).
בקיצור – אין הרבה קשר בין דמות הערפד בספר לבין מה שעשו ממנו בעולם הויזואלי.
אבל זה הרבה יותר מכך.

בראם סטוקר נראה לי כטיפוס מאד מעניין.
בין היתר אהבתי את התייחסותו אל נשים.
הוא לא היסס (למשל) לפנטז שיבוא יום ונשים תהינה אלו שתצענה נישואין לגברים (ועוד תעשנה זאת הרבה יותר טוב מהם). אבל זה סתם. בקטנה.

מה שהכי, הוא מה שעדיין רלוונטי להיום.
סטוקר התבסס על וביסס את ה"קידמה" (במרכאות, מפני שזו הייתה קידמת המאה ה-19, שבעיני המאה ה-21 כבר מעבר למיושנת ולא תקפה). אבל (!) אז הוא החל למצוא את מגבלותיה של קידמה, עד כדי הצורך לחפש פתרונות בלתי קונוונציונאליים בחוכמת העבר הרחוק יותר (ומה רלוונטי יותר לעולם סופר-מתקדם טכנולוגית בו עדיין יש מקום לעידן חדש רוחני וכל האלטרנטיבות).

יותר מזה.
במאבק למול כוח הרשע, הוא הציב קבוצת עילית – מהמיטב שבין הטובים והיפים של החברה הויקטוריאנית. אך עם התקדמות הסיפור נוסף פקפוק במהות העקרונות עליהם אותה חברה התבססה. ושוב מעמד האישה הוא הדוגמא הכי טובה. בתחילת הסיפור היא דמות נערצת מצד אחד אך נזקקת להגנה מצד שני; ובסופו – היא מוכרת כבהחלט מסוגלת לכל, כולל הגנה עצמית.
(שתי הפסקאות האחרונות מבוססות על הבנותיי את סיכומו של ג'ונטי קלייפול, בסיפא של הספר שיש לי).

לסיום אוסיף רק שדווקא בספר הזה מצאתי ברכה שמאד אהבתי (בתרגומי האישי):

"בוא בחופשיות. לך בבטחה. והשְאֵר מעט מהשמחה שהבאת".

וכי אכפת לי שהמילים בפיו של דרקולה עצמו? עד כמה שהשגתי מגעת, סטוקר יכול היה לנהל תחקיר טרנסילווני מקיף… אולי זה בא משם…
כל כך אהבתי את הברכה ואת הספר ממנו באה, עד כי ניסחתיה מחדש בדף ה-אודות שלי 🙂
