רות' עושה את זה | Ruth's Making it Happen

She has been making it happen ever since the 1960'. And of course I mean Ruth Rendell, who had taught me a lot.

When I first encountered her inspector Wexford, I was absolutely astonished.
I've read many "order-agents" and watched even more of them on a screen or other, and there Reginald (Reg) Wexford was – happily married, father and grandfather too…

Looking back at the great ones –
Sherlock Holmes had only Dr Watson as an occasional companion and just one slightly-romantic interest in a criminal woman.
Miss Jane Marple was yet another exaggeration, being a hundred year-old virgin.
Hercule Poirot had his sidekick Hastings.
James Bond… can anyone imagine him a grandfather?! (regardless of how old is the actor…).

All this led me to realize that any fiction is its creators' fantasy, regardless of the genre. In this one though, the popular fantasy seems to be the investigator that is sort of "married to the job". Never resting, nor having a personal life, because all his/her might is dedicated to return everything to rights.
Well, Ruth Rendell proves otherwise.

Another aspect of her writing that I like is the issues she tackles.
Now I don't know that this is true for all her books, but the ones I've read are full not only with the mystery to be solved, the characters involved and their lives, but also portray a bigger issue.

For example – Road Rage (1997).
Besides the drama, detecting, frustration, solving, runs the thread of the environment. The Green, Saving the Planet kind.
She has manged to show the pros and cons and to debate acceptable protest, while expressing the huge change the British society underwent from the attitude of – I voted, now it's the governments' turn to act, to the – my job hasn't ended by voting, and I will protest when those I voted for are wrong.
All this without any judgment whatsoever, leaving the readers to get to their own conclusions.
Another example is the 2005 story, titled End in Tears, dealing with surrogate mothers.

International Women's Day (this Sunday, March 8) is a great opportunity to celebrate womanly achievements. Hopefully I'll still be around next year, to tell you all (maybe even more of you) about another successful woman.

After writing this post, in looking her up, I was surprised to find out Ruth Rendell suffered a stroke last January and was reported then as being in critical yet stable condition. Couldn't find any more news and I'm wishing her well with all my heart.
I debated whether to post this or not and decided to go ahead with it.
Ruth Rendell's considerable body of work will forever remain a testimony of her success.

היא עושה את זה מאז שנות השישים. וכמובן שכוונתי לרות' רנדל, שלימדה אותי רבות.

כשנתקלתי לראשונה באינספקטור ווקספורד שלה – נדהמתי.
קראתי סוכני סדר רבים, צפיתי בעוד מהם על המסכים השונים, והנה הוא – רג'ינלד (רג') ווקספורד – נשוי באושר, אב וסב גם…

במבט לאחור אל הגדולים מכולם –
לשרלוק הולמס הייתה חברתו המקרית של ד"ר ווטסון ואיזה עניין רומנטי-מה בפושעת.
מיס ג'יין מארפל הייתה עוד הגזמה – בתולה בת 100.
להרקול פוארו היה את הייסטינגס.
ג'יימס בונד… אפשר לדמיין אותו סבא?! (בלי שום קשר לגיל השחקן המגלם אותו…).

כל זה הביא אותי להבין ש-כל פיקציה היא הפנטזיה של היוצר, בלי שום קשר לז'אנר. אם כי בנוכחי – הפנטזיה הפופולרית נדמית הבלש ש"נשוי לעבודתו". שלא ינום ולא יישן, לא יהיו לו/לה חיים פרטיים, בגלל שכל מעייניו מוקדשים להחזרת הסדר על כנו.
ובכן, רות' רנדל מוכיחה כי אפשר אחרת.

עוד היבט של סיפוריה שאני אוהבת הוא הנושאים שהיא בוחרת.
אין לי מושג אם זה נכון לכל ספריה, אך אלו שקראתי היו מלאים בתעלומה המחכה לפתרון, הדמויות המככבות, חייהם, והנושא העוטף הכל.

למשל – בכותר שהייתי מתרגמת כ"זעם כבישים" משנת 1997.
בצד הדרמה, הבילוש, התסכול, הפתרון, נמשך חוט הסביבה. מהסוג הירוק, של להציל את העולם.
הכותבת הצליחה להראות את החיוב והשלילה ולדון בשאלה מהי מחאה ראויה, יחד עם הבעת השינוי שעבר על החברה הבריטית, מגישת – את שלי עשיתי כשבחרתי ועכשיו תור הנבחרים לפעול, לגישת – מלאכתי לא נסתיימה בבחירה ואמחה כשנבחרי טועה.
וכל זאת ללא שמץ שיפוטיות, בהניחה לקוראים להגיע למסקנות שלהם.
דוגמא נוספת לנושא שכזה הוא "נגמר בבכי" משנת 2005, הדן באימהוּת סארוגטית.

יום האישה הבינלאומי (ביום ראשון הבא, ה-8 למרץ) הוא הזדמנות נהדרת לחגוג הצלחות נשיות. מקווה להיות בסביבה גם בשנה הבאה, לספר על עוד אישה מצליחה.

לאחר כתיבת הפוסט, בחיפוש המידע עליה, הופתעתי לגלות שרות' רנדל לקתה בשבץ בינואר האחרון ודוּוחה במצב קריטי אך יציב. לא הצלחתי למצוא חדשות נוספות ואני מאחלת לה בריאות מכל לבי.
התלבטתי באם להעלות לבלוג או לא והחלטתי ש-כן.
