The Sum of the Day

סיכום היום

Today a terrorist can
lie on a hospital bed next to
the attacks' victim.
Today a doctor treats
both just the same.
Today a misguided soul
can be so young and so full of
the Hate a lying inciter
with a hidden agenda
can plant in their once innocent heads.
Today I can sit
late at night,
listening to the sum of the day,
feel for the wounded and dead,
be proud of the brave:

All the unwilling heroes
that woke up this morning
thinking this would be just
another ordinary day
and then they are
the bus driver towards which the wounded man staggers;
the medic jumping into action when the wounded manages to climb the steps;
the passerby seeing a 13-year-old boy being stabbed, grabs a stick and gives chase;
the people seeing the soldier attacked in the back of yet another bus and rush to defend.

Can all this happen?
It obviously could,
since it did.

And all I can do
at the sum of today is
feel for the wounded and dead,
be proud of our brave –
men, women, kids,
that jumped in to help,
and hope when I'm called on
to be able to do
at least a fraction
of the same

היום טרוריסט יכול
לשכב על מיטת בית חולים לצד
קורבן התקפתו.
היום רופא מטפל
בשניהם באותו אופן.
היום נפש תועה
יכולה להיות כה צעירה וכה מלאה
בשנאת המסית,
עם האג'נדה החבויה,
המשתיל אותה בראש שהיה תמים.
היום אני יכולה לשבת
מאוחר בלילה,
להקשיב לסיכום היום,
לבָכות את הפצועים והמתים,
להיות גאה באמיצים:

כל הגיבורים בעל כרחם
שהתעוררו הבוקר
חושבים שזה יהיה סתם
עוד יום רגיל
ואז הם
נהג האוטובוס אליו קרטע הפצוע;
החובשת שזינקה לפעולה כשהלה עלה;
עובר האורח שראה את בן ה-13 נדקר, חטף מקל ורדף;
האנשים שראו את החייל מותקף במושב האחורי של עוד אוטובוס ומיהרו להגן.

כל זה יכול לקרות?
מן הסתם יכול היה,
היות וכך קרה.

וכל שאני יכולה
בסיכומו של היום
לבָכות את הפצועים והמתים,
להיות גאה באמיצים שלנו –
גברים, נשים, ילדים,
שזינקו לעזרה,
ולקוות שכאשר אֶקָרַא בעצמי
אהיה מסוגלת לפעול
לפחות במעט
כמוהם
