"הוידאו הרג את כוכב הרדיו"
(Not entirely my choice of a title, but still…) Once upon a time there was a song. However, here we are, several years afterwards (and then some) and the radio is still here (at least in my own life) whereas the video (cassette recorder) is gone (as is the TV that ruled it).
I have no (operational) screens but this one, at which I'm looking right now, while typing these words, that will amount to the next post about to be published on this blog.
And this screen (what can I do, it is what is) is connected to a grandpa-computer. A truly ancient museum piece, that like any other grandpa is a bit rusty, forgetful, new acquaintances aren't as easy as they once were, and it is a bit hard of hearing (and in my case – of sounding too). So if I wanted some news, the same radio, despite being even more ancient than my computer (long may it live), is my source.
Come morning I get up and go to the kettle (oh, well, washing face, brushing teeth and then boiling water for the first caffeine dose of the day). And on my way I flick a switch and let there be voice, telling me every morning what happened the day before (almost. Not including the weekend, when there are different programs). And every 17:00 (television habits die hard. I loved the five o'clock edition before the TV disappeared from my life). And every 23:00 (after all I need to know what kind of day amounted to today). And sometimes, when something really happens, in between times.
And with all my thanks and gratitude to this device, that keeps my in the loop, I can't help but wonder…
Forget the repetition. That's as it should be. Hourly news should be repeated every hour for those who haven't previously heard, until replaced by new hourly news. But… What I really don't understand…
What are they thinking (or is it just the network I'm glued to?), that ALL their listeners are Polyglots?
I don't see myself as something special. Far from it. But it seems to me that like everyone in my position I too understand mainly my native language and English (or should I say "International"?).
And there, on the radio that tells me what's going on, they broadcast each and every speaker. And for some elusive reason they don't seem to care whether he (or she) speak my language or Arabic, English, Turkish, Russian, French, German, Persian, Egyptian, Hungarian, Japanese, Polish and the devil knows what else 'cause I surly can't decipher.
Do the honorable busy toilers (at their important work!) think that over the air waves the subtitles float towards the listeners as well?
So (a) I'm more than willing to trust their translation is accurate. And (b) if they have extra time between one commercial and the next (I'm not complaining. Not really. They too need to make a living to keep broadcasting) why would they waste both my and their time airing words most of us can't understand? Why not air a song instead?
Luckily listening can be done while… (any other activity). However I here by send forth a small hope for them to act differently.
Besides, I just recently heard that it may be that other radio stations in different parts of the world are not general-journalism-based but are there to broadcast a specific point of view. I find it hard to wrap my mind around this idea. So, reader, feel free to let me know what's it like in you province of the world and how you feel about it.

(הכותרת לא ממש מבחירתי החופשית, אך בכ"ז –) היֹה היה פעם שיר. והנה, כמה וכמה (ועוד כמה) שנים לאחריו, עדיין הרדיו פה (לפחות בחיי-שלי) והוידאו (המכשיר) כבר לא (אף לא הטלוויזיה ששלטה בו).
מה לעשות ואין לי מרקעים (פועלים) מלבד זה בו אני צופה עכשיו, עת כתיבת מילים אלו, המצטרפות לפוסט, שעומד לעלות אל זה הבלוג.
והמסך הזה, (מה לעשות? גם זה מה יש) מחובר למחשב-סבא. מוצג מוזיאוני עתיק של ממש, שכמו כל סבא – קצת חורק, קצת שוכח, היכרויות חדשות מקשות עליו וחוץ מזה שהוא קצת לא שומע (ובמקרה שלי – גם לא משמיע). כך שאם בחדשות חפצתי, אותו רדיו, על אף עתיקותו ה-עוד-יותר-רבה ממחשבי (שיחיה!) – הוא ה-ספק.
ויהי בוקר, ואקום, ואלך אל הקומקום (טוב, נו – שטיפת פנים, צחצוח שיניים ואז הרתחת מים למנת הקפאין הראשונה של היום). ובדרכי – ואפליק את המתג, ויהי קול, המבשר לי בכל בוקר מה קרה אתמול (כמעט. לא כולל שבת, יום בו התוכניות אחרות). ובכל 17:00 (הרגלים טלוויזיונים קשה לשבור. מאד אהבתי את מהדורת החדשות של חמש, וגם ברדיו זה זמן היומן של היום). ובכל 23:00 (הרי אני גם צריכה לדעת לאיזה מן יום הסתכם היום). ולפעמים, במיוחד כשממש קורה משהו, גם בין-לבין.
ועם כל תודתי והוכרתי למכשיר הזה, המחבר אותי לאקטואליה (גם אם לא דרך האינפוזיה הישראלית, שנדמה כי מחוברת לכל וריד מלבד שלי) אין לי אלא לתהות…
ניחא החזרות. כמובן שיש לחזור על חדשות השעה בכל שעה, הן יש שלא שמעו בשעה הקודמת ויש לעדכנם, עד שחדשות חדשות מחליפות את קודמותיהן. אבל… מה שאני באמת לא מבינה…
מה הם חושבים להם שם, באולפנים (או, שמא, הדבר כך רק ברשת אליה אני מחוברת?), האם נדמה להם ש-כל מאזיניהם רב-לשוניים?
אני לא רואה את עצמי כמישהי מיוחדת. בכלל לא. נדמה לי שכמו כולם, גם אני מבינה בעיקר את שפתנו, ובנוסף לה, את השפה האנגלית (או "בינלאומית"?).
אבל הנה, ברדיו המספר לי מה קורה אצלנו ובעולם, משמיעים כל דובר. ומשום מה לא נראה שאכפת להם אם הוא (או היא) דוברים שפת עבר, או ערבית, אנגלית, טורקית, רוסית, צרפתית, גרמנית, פרסית, מצרית, הונגרית, יפנית, פולנית והשד יודע מה עוד כי אני בוודאי שבטח לא מסוגלת לפענח.
האם חושבים הנכבדים העוסקים במלאכה (החשובה!) כי מעל גלי האתר מרחפות אל השומעים גם כתוביות התרגום של גוף הטקסט?
אז (א) אני מוכנה ומזומנה לסמוך ידיי ולהאמין להם שתרגומם את הדברים מדוייק. ו-(ב) אם יש להם עודף זמן בין פרסומת אחת למשניה (ואני לא מקטרת. לא באמת. גם הם צריכים להתפרנס כדי להמשיך לשדר. ועדיף ככה על פני אגרה אזרחית), למה להם לבזבז את הזמן, שלהם ושלי גם יחד, בהשמעת דברים אותם הרוב לא מסוגל להבין? למה לא, במקום זאת, לשדר איזה שיר?
מזלי (ומזל כולנו, לדעתי) ששמיעה אפשרית תוך כדי… (מה שלא יהיה). אבל-ברם-אולם הריני שולחת מעל פני הרשת תקווה קטנה להתנהלות אחרת.
חוץ מזה, ממש לאחרונה שמעתי שיכול להיות ותחנות רדיו במחוזות אחרים אינן מבוססות עיתונות כללית אלא דעה ספציפית. די קשה לי (אם לשאול בכ"ז משפות אחרות) "לעטוף את המוח שלי" סביב הרעיון הזה. כך שאם מגיעים לכאן קוראים אחרים, הרגישו חופשי לספר לי איך זה אצלכם ומה דעתכם.

שאלה מצוינת שאלת… גם אני תוהה לפעמים לגבי זה. אבל אני שומע הרבה פחות חדשות ברדיו כנראה, אז פחת נתקל בתופעה הזאת
