The Mercedes

המרצדס

It happened to me one day. I was walking along in the sun. The wide street was pretty deserted. With me, meaning – on the same sidewalk and in the same direction though a bit apart, were two high-school kids. Otherwise there was no one around. On our right some cars were parked. The one we were all approaching – a new Mercedes – seemed somehow different. Why? I couldn't really understand. When I got nearer, I finally did.

The car was idling.

And what is so weird about that, you might ask.
Well, as mentioned – besides me, there were just two kids, who may have been of a driving age, but at that time I walked with them, on foot, from the corner.
And in more blatant words – the Mercedes just stood there, abandoned.
Its' keys in the ignition, its' motor running and no-one with it, in or within its' environs.

The three of us kept walking, glancing sideways. Though I didn't hear what the kids said, I think that like me they at the very least raised an eyebrow versus the new Mercedes so left alone though started.
I have no idea how long I dawdled, peeked and yet – no one came.

And if the incident had been the one and only, I'd have filed it under 'bizarre'. But it happened to me again, with an old Mazda in a much busier street. And even if I happened to see that person abandoning the keys in the (started) ignition, I was in a hurry. And it seemed to me that so was he. So I didn't stop either of us for questioning.

The third, I don't remember what kind of car it was but, of course – a third is always special. This third was abandoned idling with its' doors wide open.

And still I'd have forgotten the lot if it wasn't for the fourth, upon which I stumbled just the other day. The fourth was a van almost fully loaded with some merchandise…

And (of course – to my own opinion, though maybe not of others'?) I was left wondering at another thing I don't get (maybe a new fashion?) –

Who abandons cars like that, in general, but especially – a new Mercedes?

זה קרה לי יום אחד. הלכתי לתומי ביום שמש קייצי (כן, אכן חלף זמן-מה מאז). הרחוב הרחב סביבי היה די שומם. יחד איתי, כלומר – על אותו צד מדרכה ובאותו כיוון, אם כי במרחק-מה, הלכו שני תלמידי-תיכון. מעבר לשלושתנו ולאורך כל הרחוב הנראה לעין, לא הייתה כל תנועה. מצד ימין חנו אי-אילו מכוניות. האחת אליה התקרבנו – מרצדס חדשה – נדמתה לי קצת משונה. רק כאשר התקרבתי ממש, הבנתי למה.

מנועה הילך סרק.

ומה כל כך מוזר בתופעה?
ובכן, כפי שציינתי – מלבדי היו בסביבה רק שני תלמידים, שיתכן והיו בגיל-רישיון, אך באותה הזדמנות הלכתי איתם רגלית עוד מהפינה.
ובמילים עוד יותר בוטות – המרצדס פשוט עמדה שם, נטושה.
מפתחותיה במתנע, הילוכה סרק (או פארק?) ואף איש לא שם איתה, לא בה ולא מסביבה.

שלושתנו המשכנו ללכת, שלושתנו הגנבנו מבטים. אמנם לא שמעתי מה הילדים אומרים, אך לדעתי גם הם לכל הפחות הרימו גבה למול המרצדס החדשה, המותנעת והעזובה.
אין לי מושג עד כמה התמהמהתי, התעכבתי, הצצתי ועדיין – איש לא בא.

ואם המקרה היה יחידאי, יתכן שהייתי מתייקת אותו תחת סימן שאלה תמוה. אך זה קרה לי שוב. עם איזו מאזדה ישנה, ברחוב הרבה יותר צר ועמוס המולה. ואף אם באותה פעם שנייה ראיתי את מי שיצא ונטש מפתחות במתנע (המותנע!), מיהרתי. ונדמה היה לי שכך גם הוא. לכן לא נעצרתי לעכב ולשאול מה-מי-מו.

בפעם השלישית, אני כבר לא זוכרת איזו מכונית זו הייתה, אך כמובן – השלישית תמיד מיוחדת. המכונית הזו עמדה מותנעת וסורקת והגדילה לפתוח דלתותיה לרווחה.

ועדיין הייתי מתייקת הכל אלמלא הרביעית, בה נתקלתי באחד האתמולים האחרונים.
זו הייתה מסחרית. והעלתה בדעתי שדרוג לפתק הרגיל של 'פקח, פורק סחורה' בנוסח – לא נראה לך מתאים, שאני עומד פה על אדום-לבן? תזיז את האוטו בעצמך.

ו(כמובן, לדעתי, אך אולי לא כך לדעת אחרים?) שנותרתי תוהה למול עוד דבר שאני לא מבינה (ואולי אף אופנה חדשה?) –

מי עוזב מכוניות ככה? בכלל ובמיוחד אותה מרצדס החדשה?
