השלכות

Chinese Lin Yutang was a writer, translator, linguist and inventor. You can read a lot more about him right here.

Turns out he was quoted a lot. But the quote of him that I found a while back and liked was:

When small men begin to cast big shadows, it means that the sun is about to set.

I haven't found (which doesn't mean it's not there, just that I didn't find it) the full article from which this sentence was taken. So I don't really have a clue as to the true intent. However I always thought about it not in terms of physical measurements.

It is widely known that the lower the sun in the sky – its' light hits everything at an angle that lengthens the shadow. So I don't think the man bothered to state the obvious.
I do think he meant small people in everything non-physical that makes a human (which many names have attempted to describe. Like soul, psyche, spirit, personality, character and more).
In the idea that something non-physical can cast a shadow I understood – influence and consequence.

After all a deed does not have to be physical. A deed can be a saying.
And sayings can have many influences and consequences (and they usually do, including the unpredictable and unconscious ones).

For a while now I've been wondering versus all kinds of sayings – how much (if at all) did the sayer stop to think about the possible consequences.

Of course I don't mean you, dear reader, but in general. In the world (wide and local). Sayings of all kinds, at times, reach my knowledge. And it made me want to send the world at large a short reminder, of what an old Chinese guy said once.
It seemed relevant to me, so I offered as food for thought…

סיני חכם אחד, שענה לשם Lin Yutang (סלחו לי, לא אסתכן בביטוי השם הזה, בטח שלא באיותו בעברית), היה סופר, מתרגם, בלשן וממציא. אפשר לקרוא עליו עוד הרבה יותר (באנגלית) בדיוק כאן.

מסתבר שהאיש צוטט מספר פעמים, אך הציטוט אותו, בו נתקלתי בעבר הרחוק יותר ואהבתי, היה:

כאשר אנשים קטנים מתחילים להטיל צללים ארוכים, סימן שהשמש עומדת לשקוע.

לא מצאתי (מה שלא אומר שאין, רק שלא מצאתי) העתק של המאמר המלא ממנו נלקח המשפט הזה. כך שלמעשה, אין לי מושג ממשי ל-מה התכוון באמת. אם כי תמיד חשבתי על הרעיון שלא במובן של מידות פיזיות.

מן הידועות הוא כי ככל שהשמש מנמיכה בשמיים, אורה נתקל בכל דבר מזווית שמאריכה את צלו. כך שלא נראה לי כי האיש טרח לציין את המובן מאליו.
מה ש-כן נראה לי הוא כי כוונתו הייתה לאנשים קטנים בכל המובנים הלא פיזיים המהווים את האדם (ולזה ניסו להדביק כל מני שמות. כמו נשמה, נפש, רוח, אישיות, אופי ועוד).
וברעיון של צל המוטל על-ידי כל מה שלא פיזי, הבנתי – השפעה והשלכה.

הרי מעשה אינו חייב להיות פיזי. מעשה יכול בהחלט להיות אמירה (למשל).
ולאמירות בהחלט יכולות להיות השלכות והשפעות (ובדרך כלל יש להן המונים כאלו, כולל הבלתי צפויות ולא מוּדעות).

זה זמן אני תוהה, למול אמירות כאלה ואחרות – עד כמה נעצר (אם בכלל) המתבטא לחשוב על השלכות אפשריות של מעשהו.

כמובן שאני לא מתכוונת אליך. אלא בכלל, בעולם (המקומי והרחב). התבטאויות של בני אדם המגיעות מדי פעם לטווח הידיעה שלי, גרמו לי לרצות לשלח אל העולם בכללותו תזכורת קצרה ל-מה שסיני חכם אחד אמר פעם.
נראה לי רלוונטי, כך שהגשתי כחומר למחשבה…
