Trevanian, in his (best to my opinion, though behind the times and un-readble today) book Shibumi, of 1979, described what was translated (and I loosely translate back) as a 'proximity sense' or the 'proximity system' (I've no way of knowing what he actually wrote and how he called it).
This means the ability to locate by sense a physical closeness and/or a mental concentration.
For example – the hero of the book sits in a closed prison cell, and someone on his way to him, in a different cell-block speaks about him to another, meaning – concentrating his thought on him, and the hero gets it, even in his closed cell.

The practical meaning within the story – this ability allows navigation in underground caves on the one hand, and on the other – immediate movement aside with any concentration by anyone on the hero (a very unusual hero in many ways).
In other words – if someone points a camera (or a weapon) the hero immediately moves. So he cannot be photographed (or shot).

I have no clue what-so-ever whether Trevanian invented this sense, or based it on something real. Although the difficulty I encounter when out photographing birds, makes me think that these might have such a sense.
The Cormorant for example, the moment I fix my eyes, even before the camera, in an instant turns from me and swims away, or takes off, or dives…

טרווניאן, בספרו (הטוב ביותר, לדעתי, אם כי אבד עליו הכלח ובלתי-קריא כיום) שיבומי, משנת 1979, תיאר מה שתורגם בעברית כ-'חוש הקירבה' או 'מערכת הקירבה' – היכולת לאתר בחושים קירבה גופנית, ו/או ריכוז מחשבתי.
למשל, גיבור הספר יושב בתא סגור בבית-כלא, ומישהו בדרכו אליו באגף אחר מדבר עליו עם אדם נוסף, כלומר – מתרכז בו במחשבתו, והגיבור קולט את זה גם בהיותו סגור בתאו.

במשמעות המעשית בסיפור – היכולת הזו מאפשרת ניווט במערות תת-קרקעיות מחד, ומאידך תזוזה מיידית הצדה למול כל התרכזות של מישהו בגיבור הסיפור (הלא שגרתי, תרתי משמע, ומבחינות רבות).
ובמילים אחרות – אם מישהו מכוון אליו מצלמה (או נשק) הגיבור זז מיד. כך אי אפשר לצלם אותו (או לצלוף בו).

אין לי מושג קלוש שבקלושים באם טרווניאן המציא מהרהורי לבו או התבסס על משהו מציאותי. אם כי הקושי בו אני נתקלת בצילום עופות וציפורים, גורם לי לחשוב, שיתכן ולאלו יש חוש כזה.
הקורמורן, למשל, ברגע שאני ממקדת מבט, עוד לפני מיקוד המצלמה, מיד פונה הלאה ממני ושוחה-מתרחק, או ממריא, או צולל…
