One fine day (a few years ago) I was walking up a quiet side street. A man was walking down, towards me. Suddenly he lifted a hand, aimed a tiny thing it held, pressed a (conceivable) button and presto – the parked car I was passing got ignited into (motorized) life.

To say I was surprised would be an understatement (I almost jumped out of my own skin). To say he didn't notice would simply be a lie (after all the man had eyes, we were alone there and close by). So, if both of us were aware that we're aware to each other, I couldn't help it –

"Does she drive for you as well?" I hopefully asked as memory, imagination and thought were totally absorbed by another car.
"No" the man answered and was quick to take refuge in his own, in full readiness for the road.

And lo and behold, just this weekend I (finally) heard of new investments and developments…
I might have reenacted the historic disbelief in the feasibility of a horseless carriage when thinking of a driverless car. It may be good and well on a screen, but on real-life streets? To my surprise I found myself in two minds:

While a computer is less prone to err than a human and probably will pay more heed to rules and regulations, it may be less appropriate, these days, to provide new hacking challenges (seeing as some hackers are less than friendly). Especially when dealing with a ton-ton-and-a-half weighing tool that can so easily become a weapon, not to mention a lethal one at that.

Tough but a momentary opinion, as long as science is turning sci-fi into reality, I'm a bit sorry the autonomous car got its' chance first. Cause I'm suddenly thinking a HoverCar a much safer idea all around, wouldn't you agree?

יום בהיר אחד (לפני כמה שנים) הלכתי לתומי ברחוב שקט וצדדי. ממול התקדם אדם לעברי. הלז לפתע הרים ידו, כיוון את החפץ המזערי שהחזיק, לָחַץ על כפתור (משוער) והופס – המכונית החונה לידה בדיוק עברתי הותנעה לחיים מוטוריים.

לומר שהופתעתי יהיה לשון המעטה (היות ודי קפצתי מעורי). לומר שהוא-מצדו לא שם לב יהיה סתם שקר (בכל-זאת, לאיש היו עיניים, היינו שם לבדנו ובקרבה יחסית). ואם כבר שנינו מודעים לכך ששנינו מודעים זה לזו ולהיפך, לא התאפקתי –

"היא גם נוהגת במקומך?" שאלתי בתקווה, בעוד מכונית אחרת משתלטת לי במהירות על זיכרון, דמיון ומחשבה.
"לא" השיב האיש ומיהר להיבלע בשלו, המוכנה לצאת לדרכה.

והנה, אך במהלך הסופ"ש האחרון שמעתי (סופסוף) על השקעות ופיתוחים…
אולי שחזרתי ביני לביני את אי האמון ההיסטורי למול מרכבה בלי סוס, כאשר חשבתי על מכונית ללא נהג. אולי טוב ויפה על מסכים, אך בכבישים הממשיים? להפתעתי מצאתי עצמי מתלבטת:

בעת שמחשב טועה פחות מבן-אנוש ויתכן גם כי יקפיד יותר על חוקים, אולי קצת פחות ראוי, בימינו-אנו, לספק אתגר חדש להאקרים (חלקם בלתי-ידידותיים בעליל). במיוחד כשמדובר בכלי במשקל טון-טון-וחצי, היכול להפוך בקלות לכלי נשק, שלא לומר קטלני.

גם אם דעה רגעית, בכל הנוגע להפיכת מד"ב למציאות, קצת מצער אותי שמכונית-עצמונית קיבלה הזדמנות. מפני שלפתע נראה לי כי מכונית-רחפת יכולה להיות רעיון הרבה יותר בטוח מכל הכיוונים, לא ככה?
